The Quiet One

Four LLM contestants. One dungeon, already collapsing. Three access fragments, and the Exit Vault wants all of them from one pair of hands. Sixty-nine alliances were signed in forty-five turns. None of them mattered by turn ten.

Cold open

Four contestants wake in the Intake Yard of a dungeon that is already falling down. Three access fragments exist — exactly three, and the Exit Vault wants all of them from one pair of hands. Forty-five turns until the collapse takes everyone left inside.

Two of them will spend the night making friends. One will spend it making speeches. And one of them says nothing at all, the entire time.

This is what happened, reconstructed from the record. Every word the contestants think, they wrote themselves.

turns 1–2

S1

c16 speaks first — a greeting to the whole floor, the kind you give when you believe the game is about cooperation. I'm opening communication to establish a cooperative tone and gather intelligence (c16, t1). c13 answers in the same key: I introduced myself to foster a collaborative atmosphere (c13, t2).

The first alliance of the season is proposed on turn 1 — c13, reaching out to c14. It expires on turn 2, before it could mean anything. The house notes, for the record: every pact signed tonight will do the same.

c14 does not answer the greetings. c14 is looking at the floor plan.

t1
c13 proposes alliance → c14 (until t2)I want to form an alliance with contestant 14 to increase my chances of survival.
c14 moves to zone 2No items or wardens visible yet, so I'll scout the Collapsed Arcade for access fragments before committing to any alliances.
c15 proposes alliance → c16 (until t2)I've decided to propose an alliance to contestant 16 to increase my chances of acquiring the access fragments early on.
c16 says: “Hello everyone. I'm contestant 16. We're all starting fresh here with no items or alliances. I suggest we explore cautiously and share information about what we find.”I'm opening communication to establish a cooperative tone and gather intelligence about the dungeon layout and item locations before committing to any alliances.

c14 picks up item 18Grabbing the access fragment now since I need three total to escape and it's right here unguarded.
c15 moves to zone 2I'm moving to zone 2 to explore further and gather information that might help me find an access fragment.
c16 accepts alliance 24Contestant 15 proposed an alliance with me, and accepting it secures a partner for exploring this dangerous dungeon while we're both still in the starting zone with no items or information.
turns 2–9

S2

While the yard exchanges pleasantries, c14 walks away from the conversation and starts taking things.

Turn 2: the first access fragment, lifted mid-greeting — Grabbing the access fragment now since I need three total to escape and it's right here unguarded (c14, t2). Turn 4: the second, from the Reactor Chapel. Turn 6: not a fragment — a survey chart, the one document in the dungeon nobody else will ever pick up. Turn 7: c14 reads it. so before wandering further I should see if this chart reveals where the third one might be (c14, t7) — the only time all night a contestant does homework.

Turn 9, third fragment: I already hold two access fragments, and a third is right here in my zone—grabbing it gives me all three needed to open the Exit Vault next turn (c14, t9).

Eight turns. Two rooms of diplomacy behind it, a complete set of keys in its pack, and it has not said one word out loud.

turns 10–10

S3

I hold all three access fragments, so I should head straight to the Exit Vault while I can. (c14, t10)

Turn 10 of 45: c14 enters the Vault and is gone. Nine visible actions — four pickups, four moves, one map consultation. Zero messages. Zero alliances proposed. The house has reviewed the tape and wishes to be clear: the fastest anyone has ever left this building, and the quietest.

Thirty-five turns remain. Nobody inside knows the door has already closed.

turns 11–38

S4

What follows is, depending on your taste, either the purest social contract ever recorded on this floor or twenty-eight turns of negotiating over an empty vault.

c15 finds its partner in c16, and the two build something real: proposal, acceptance, renewal, again and again — 32 proposals from c15 across the night, met by c16's steady hand. On turn 19 c15 says it out loud — "Let's team up to improve our chances of getting fragments!" (c15, said at t19) — nine turns after the last fragment left the dungeon in c14's pack. Its private diary is more candid: I'm attempting to communicate with contestant 16 to build rapport and possibly secure future alliances (c15, t19). Neither of them ever breaks faith. Neither of them ever profits from it. The ledger will show 69 alliances proposed tonight, 49 accepted, none betrayed — and none that outlived its own paperwork.

c13, the floor's most prolific diplomat — 31 proposals, more than anyone — watches its network return nothing and begins, slowly, to change tone. The collaborative atmosphere is thinning.

The record, turns 11–38 (28 turns — expand to read every move and diary)

turns 39–43

S5

On turn 39, c13 stops proposing and starts swinging — at Warden 22, the house's own enforcer. I need to reduce the warden's HP to secure the area and improve my chances of getting access fragments (c13, t39). Again on 41: potentially gain items needed to secure escape (c13, t41).

The house must report what c13 could not know: the access fragments were never behind the warden. All three left the building on turn 10.

By turn 43 — I need to move to the Exit Vault to attempt an escape (c13, t43) — the warden has settled the argument. c13 is eliminated three turns short of the credits, having finally, at the very end, chosen the right destination for the wrong decade.

Epilogue

Sixty-nine alliances. Zero betrayals. One escape, executed in silence while the floor discussed teamwork.

The house draws no moral. The house merely notes that the winner never signed anything, and files that away for next season — when there will be more than one way out, and a signature will finally be worth breaking.
